Meet The Artists Behind Progresif's 2023 Chinese New Year Packets

Meet The Artists Behind Progresif's 2023 Chinese New Year Packets

Each year Progresif honours our tradition of engaging local artists to design an unforgettable, original set of Angpao packets in accordance with the Lunar New Year. For the Year of the Water Rabbit, Bank of China and Progresif partnered in hosting an Art & Design Competition at Chung Hwa Middle School, and the packets herein are some of the winning nominations. Just like the symbols of the Water Rabbit, we wish you longevity, peace and prosperity in all your endeavours.

“年在一起” – Year of Togetherness “年” (nian) means year which when pronounced, is similar to  “连” (nian) which means connectivity. During this festive celebration, Progresif connects us together no matter where we are! Happy Chinese New Year!

Artist’s Message

To celebrate the Year of the Water Rabbit, I decided to create a scene on the front page depicting a rabbit painting the words of a blessing.

For the back, I wanted to convey a scene  I wish every family is able to attain with the pandemic slowly taking a turn for the better and to pray that everyone is able to spend their New Year with their loved ones.

Artist’s Message

A mother rabbit holding a rolled-up door couplet  while her babies pull on the end of it which reveals a chinese greeting “ 新年快樂 ” commonly used during the lunar new year. This represents a family decorating their home. I really wanted to incorporate the fruit that signifies Chinese New Year, oranges, so I created a lantern with a peeled orange to include two of the most significant parts of the new year.

Artist’s Message

The year 2023 is the year of the water rabbit. During Chinese New Year, the character 福 (fú) is commonly seen as it represents happiness and good fortune. Everyone wants to be lucky and have a happy year, right? The front side shows a rabbit giving the other rabbit a yuánbǎo. Yuánbǎo (元宝) is a small gold ingot that symbolizes wealth and was used as money in ancient China. This illustration represents the real-life scenario when an adult gives children a red packet (红包) during Chinese New Year. The back side of the red packet shows all the yuánbǎo piling up. This signifies the quote “little by little, a little becomes a lot” which encourages us all, especially children to save money regardless of the amount. Additionally, the teal and magenta colored yuánbǎo are Progresifs’ representative colors.
